ASA Award Winners 2010: Silver on Granite

The presentation of the eagerly awaited ASA Design Awards took place at a Ceremony and Dinner held at the Park Inn Hotel, (no favoritism but itself a winner on the night) on the 11 March 2011, The award winners and their guests celebrated the successful architects and buildings, receiving specially commissioned certificates from Mr. John Russell of Russwood, principal awards sponsor; who have a long tradition of partnership and generous support to other chapters within the RIAS, and for which the ASA is most grateful.

There was an overwhelming response in the number of entries; more than 200 over the six categories far exceed expectations. That there were so many awards to present in 2010 is testament to the extremely high standard of projects that have been completed over the last few years.

Stage I of the judging process was undertaken by a select band of architects, members of the Chapter chaired by the Chapter President. The judges faced an onerous task in selecting a final short list for the awards, architectural debate enthused; however, they were in agreement that the overall standard of the entries was extremely high and that clients who show vision and courage are rewarded with great architecture.

Stage II judging was undertaken by three invited guest judges, led by Willie Watt, President of the Dundee Institute of Architects, assisted by David McClean, Head of Scott Sutherland School of Architecture, Aberdeen and lay judge Rob Leslie former Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Building in Scotland and currently a UK Ambassador.

“The launch of the ASA Awards is to be applauded, and it is particularly pleasing to see the range and quality of short listed work in this inaugural year. It bodes very well for the future, and helps to raise the profile of architecture, and discussion about architecture, in the region.”
David McClean

In addition to the winners of the key awards, Commendations and Special Mentions were also awarded to schemes that were considered by the jury to be worthy of acclamation. A public exhibition will tour the regions to showcase the projects in giving a clear message of what good design is all about.
