The principal aim was, and has always been, to restore and conserve buildings of historical and architectural merit, especially those that are at risk of loss. As a building preservation trust, the NESPT has access to funds, which other charities, government bodies or individuals might not. We operate on a revolving fund basis: money gained from the sale of a property goes right back into the Trust for purchase and restoration of further buildings.
To date, the Trust has successfully undertaken upwards of 11 projects, including restoring a row of fishing cottages in Burn Banks, near Cove. Considering that until very recently, there has never been a full-time, dedicated officer to the Trust, this figure is suddenly impressive. Following the split from Aberdeen City and Moray, the Trust sought to raise its profile, and thus developed a five-year business plan. The plan outlined the need for a Project Manager/Trust Administrator, which position has recently been filled by Sarah Boldwyn. She is based at the Aberdeenshire Council’s offices in Viewmount, Stonehaven, and is responsible for taking the Trust forward towards its aims of becoming both self-sustaining and undertaking further, greater and increased projects in the North East.
As we expand our presence in the North East, we hope to forge links with local architects, builders, surveyors, educational establishments and anyone else – in professional capacity or otherwise – who shares our goal of preserving this corner of Scotland’s built heritage.
Please contact us for information on projects we’re undertaking or if you’d like to explore ways to get involved.
