CPD event: Maximum Timber seminar, 25th November 2011
Edinburgh Napier University’s Forest Products Research Institute is charged with delivering Wood for Good’s continuing professional development programme for architects in Scotland and the first of a series of major CPD events designed specifically for small to medium-sized practices in the Grampian region will take place on Friday 25 November 2011. Structured around the use of UK grown timber, this intensive half-day session aims to provide practitioners with a wealth of information not only about the range of material and products available but also about best practice in the design and use of timber.

In addition, the event will introduce an exciting new EU supported initiative of potential benefit to every small to medium-sized practice in Scotland and will also include presentations based on two new and invaluable reference publications for architects – one on the properties and construction potential of Sitka spruce, the country’s largest softwood timber resource, and the other the result of eight years of intensive research on the design, installation and performance of external timber cladding. Both publications are intended to encourage greater - and more creative - use of UK grown timber and these, together with a third providing guidance on the specification of locally grown timber and valued in total at £75, will all be available free to attendees on Friday 25 November 2011.

This major CPD opportunity will take place in the Council Chamber of Aberdeenshire Council, Woodhill House, Westburn Road, Aberdeen, AB16 5GB. The event itself is offered at no cost whatsoever to small to medium sized architectural practices in the Grampian region and CPD certificates of attendance accredited by Edinburgh Napier University will be provided to all who attend. Due to venue size, numbers are restricted to 60 in total and so early booking is essential. To secure your place(s), simply click on the following link –

Householder Permitted Development Rights
Scotland will get new permitted development rights for householders in February 2012, Planning Minister Aileen Campbell has confirmed. The new regulations will, within limits, allow new extensions to be built without the need of planning approval. Also allowed will be access ramps, sheds, garages and decking, though restrictions will still remain for conservation areas and listing buildings. Changes are expected to remove around one fifth of householder applications for changes to existing dwellings from the system. The Scottish government faced criticism from Audit Scotland last month over delays to the introduction of the new development rights, which the watchdog said were preventing planning authorities from diverting more resources into the production of up to date local development plans.
