Building Standards Update Event
On 1 October 2010, the new 2010 versions of the Technical Handbooks will come into force. Prior to their introduction, Building Standards Division and RIAS have co-organised two events which focus on the major changes in the guidance. The event will be held in Aberdeen on Wednesday 11th August.
The events will run from noon until 5.15pm and will include a sandwich lunch and afternoon refreshments. The programme will include a general overview, expert presentations on all six Sections and Q&A sessions. A delegate charge will be applied to cover venue hire, catering and administration expenses but RIAS has endeavoured to keep the cost to members as low as possible.
The cost, including lunch and update materials, will be;
RIAS members £30 + VAT (£35.25)
Non-members £50 + VAT (£58.75)
A number of places for RIAS members on the reduced income membership rate will be reserved at a cost of £15 + VAT (£17.62) and will be assigned on a 'first come first served' basis.

CIRCULAR - Austin Heritage Consultants
Austin Heritage Consultants is run by Jennifer Austin, who has over 11 years experience in the heritage conservation industry in both Australia and the UK. Studying at the University of Sydney, Jen graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Architecture) in 1998 and continued her studies at the university to receive a Masters degree (with honours) in Heritage Conservation in 2002.
Jen’s work includes the preparation of conservation plans, conservation statements, heritage audits, character appraisals and the development of site and building gazetteers and databases. Extensive historical research and analysis play a key role in her work.
Project experience ranges from small, individual buildings (such as houses, churches, theatres and industrial buildings) to the investigation of large sites and landscapes (including large country houses, estates and conservation areas). As every site is different, Jen is keen to help her clients with their individual needs and is happy to collaborate with other professionals as needed.

Civic Society Awards 2010
The Civic Society are once again looking for nominations for their awards. As a Chapter we have many new buildings which make a significant enhancement to our City and it is time we, as a profession; let everyone know. To that end, let's try to make a number of submissions this year, either buildings you or your practice have been involved with, or other buildings you think are worthy of an award. Buildings should by their scale, design and siting make significant contribution to amenity. Buildings or works of note should have been completed since August 2009 and also includes buildings that will be completed by September 2010.
Your nominations should be made ASAP to:
Sheila Riddell
69 Devonshire Road
Aberdeen
sriddell [at] supanet.com
In the first instance, the address and building is all that is required, further details will be gathered at a later date of buildings deemed suitable. Judging will take place in July/August 2010.
57-10 Lectures
You will be aware that the students have organised the 5710 series of lectures for a number of years. These lectures have proved very successful in the past and created much interest and discussion within the profession. Previously the event has been sponsored by others, including from MRT Architects. This year the Chapter have provided sponsorship to 5710.
We have arranged that entrance to all RIAS Member Architects will be free, initially for a limited period to allows us to gauge support; and I would be grateful that if you attend any of the lectures you make known your affiliation to the ASA/Chapter at the door.
Please note that additional information on each lecture can be found on www.5710.org.uk. All lectures are held on a Thursday at 5.00pm at Scott Sutherland School of Architecture lecture theatre SB42.
